Six new satellite towns – Shwe Lin Ban, Pan Hlaing, Thilawa, Front Dagon, Htauk Kyant as well as the new Yangon City Project in the south of the city – will be upgraded as new developing townships to cater to the rising population and number of migrants, said U Min Htein, director general of Department of Urban and Housing Development.
“The implementation of the new plan to develop Yangon is important because there will be over 10 million residents by 2040 in Yangon even though there were 5.6 million residents in 2014,” he said.
“The population is increasing at a rate of 1.69 per cent every year in Yangon now and there are also many migrants in Yangon. For the increasing population, new satellite township projects and surrounding urban development township projects are needed soon,” he added.
Meanwhile, there are also ongoing urban regeneration and redevelopment projects, special economic and industrial zone development projects, infrastructure development projects and ring roads projects being implemented, according to the MOC.
In total, there are 11 urban development projects are currently being implemented to develop Yangon, according to the regional government’s one- year implementation report.
According to that report, the Yangon regional government will be focusing on implementing several new township projects -- Front Dagon, Twante, Thanlynn, Htan Ta Pin, Hmaw Bi and Hlegu.
Moreover, new satellite township development projects will also be implemented not only in Yangon but also in other states and divisions by the MOC.
